The shock resignation of John Key as Prime Minister, who was probably the best New Zealand Prime Minister in our lifetime is one of those unpredictable events that could have a serious impact on house prices. Bill English this week announced a budget surplus of $1.83 billion for the 12 months to June 2016 and the economy has grown 3.6% in the same period.

The unemployment rate fell to 4.9%, the lowest since 2008. Projections are for large
surpluses going forward. Notwithstanding the fact that National proposes more spending on welfare such as health and schools, paying off overseas debt and tax cuts, the risk of a government change next year is greater without John Key.

A Labour led, Labour/Greens coalition government would mean lower business
confidence, tax increases and probably property taxes such as a capital gains tax. Obviously house prices as well as the economy would be negatively affected. As they say however, a week is a very long time in politics, let alone a year.
